Miranda Millen, Navigating Consent Discourse in a Post #MeToo Era: Women's Experiences of Consent, Pleasure and Wellbeing

Winner - La Trobe University VYT local programme (2023)

Transcript:

In recent years we have talked a lot about sexual assault and consent. We’ve made changes, now only a clear and enthusiastic “yes” means yes! But despite this change, women who say “yes” and often, those who say “no” are still called a ‘slut’. We exist in a contradictory time. On one hand, women’s sexuality is embraced in pop culture. On the other, it remains demonised. We now know a lot about sexual assault and consent. but no one has thought to ask: how do these narratives affect how women enjoy sex? My thesis asks, in this contradictory time, how do these narratives affect women’s negotiation of sexual pleasure?
