Chemistry has contributed to irreversible global issues. We need to change our approach to chemistry education and equip students with these key competencies so that they can take sustainable action My study focused on developing systems thinking in first year chemistry students. I designed a ST activity where students learned about this molecule used in laundry detergents and its impact in the economy, the environment and society. Students had to expand this systems oriented concept map to apply their systems thinking skills to visualize the complex interconnections of these subsystems. The visualization tool was effective as students zoomed out of the chemistry to recognized its real-world implications to understand its interconnectedness this research is significant as learning in chemistry can be made more meaningful and can inspire students to take ownership.
